Our Mission Statement

The mission of Eveninglight Church of God in Christ Jesus, Inc. is to provide a supportive fellowship which promotes genuine love, fervent worship and a commitment to outreach ministries furthering the Apostles' Doctrine.

Our Doctrinal Statement

We Believe that the Bible is the inspired and infallible (unalterable) Word of God, written by holy men of old, as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.


We Believe in one God who is infinite in power, holy in nature, attributes and purposes, as well as omniscient and omnipresent. We believe that He was revealed to us as Father in creation, as Son in redemption, and as the Holy Spirit in His comforting grace that never leaves those who trust Him. 


We Believe that in Jesus, dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, for it pleased the Father that in Him should all the fullness dwell. 


We Believe in the virgin birth. Jesus was both human and divine. He was God manifested in the flesh.


We Believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. We believe that He ascended on high and has sent His Spirit (the Holy Ghost), which was poured out at Jerusalem over 2000 years ago, and it is this same Spirit that is filling the hearts of those who diligently seek Him today.


We Believe in baptism in water by immersion in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and the baptism of the Holy Ghost, speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. 

This constitutes the new birth.


We Believe in a holy, sanctified life. We believe in divine healing, communion, and foot washing. We believe also in the glorious catching away of the saints when Jesus returns in the clouds in glory to take His people to heaven (the Rapture). 


Our Chief Aim is to glorify the Savior, who is Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto Himself a peculiar 

people, zealous of good works.

Our Services

We offer a variety of worship services throughout the week. Our services are designed to help our members and guests connect with God and grow in their faith.

Apostle Dr. Luther Cherry & Evangelist Symera Cherry

About Our Pastor

Apostle Dr. Luther Cherry, the son of sharecroppers, is a native of Bertie County. He grew up in the Snakebite Community, attended the Bertie County Schools and graduated in 1972 with high honors. Dr. Cherry’s advanced education includes:


  • Bachelor of Arts Degree from Saint Augustine’s University, Raleigh, North Carolina 
  • Master of Arts Degree from North Carolina Central University, Durham, North Carolina
  • Doctoral Studies at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina 
  • Doctorate Degree from Apex School of Theology, Durham, North Carolina


As a Summa Cum Laude graduate, Dr. Cherry attained numerous honors and outstanding awards during his undergraduate and graduate studies. 


Dr. Cherry is married to his lovely wife, Evangelist Symera Gatling, who serves graciously as our First Lady. They are the proud parents of three children, Lutrisha (deceased), Thurston and Andrea, and one grandson, Andre’.


Dr. Cherry is a retired educator who served 30 years in the field of education, working as a Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Associate Superintendent in the Wake County School System, Raleigh, NC. 


Dr. Cherry is also an accomplished musician who has served as pianist, organist, soloist and choir director for numerous choirs and Gospel groups. As a soloist, Dr. Cherry has performed and recorded with the Saint Augustine’s University Gospel Choir and Raleigh Interdenominational Mass Choir. He is currently the CEO of L&S Ministries, LLC, Music Production. 


Dr. Cherry’s community service has included membership on the YMCA of the Triangle Board of Directors, the Cary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Capital Area Soccer League Board of Directors, Central Rotary Club and many other civic organizations. 


In addition to his outstanding accomplishments in education, arts and community, Dr. Cherry has fulfilled his true passion and calling as Senior Apostle and Pastor of Eveninglight Church of God in Christ Jesus Inc., Windsor, North Carolina. He has served faithfully since 1994 leading church through numerous advancements, building renovations and spiritual growth to accommodate the needs and maximize the gifts and talents of all congregants. He has also held many offices/positions and ordained titles in the church at the state and national levels. 


Dr. Cherry is a man of diverse talents who maximizes every opportunity to use his gifts in honor of the Lord. He is committed to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ.
